So I bit the bullet and I watched the Minecraft movie, I'm gonna be honest its really bad, like really bad. I know this sounds really silly but it genuinely made me angry. I admit I'm not the biggest minecraft fan its not like i play it every day or anything. However I do think its a really good game, special even, the impact this game has had on the world is really crazy to think about it. Music videos, lets plays, fan animations, many youtubers have become house hold names by playing minecraft. Not only that but minecraft is even used in education used to teach math, computer science, agriculture and even history! I have seen people use minecraft to create an actual working phone in minecraft and order pizza from inside the game.
And the movie is nothing like that, its a generic adventure story made on an assembly line. its empty calories, I don't remember the characters names the plot is so bare bones it can be hung up in a science class and the effects are just as bad if not worse than the snow white remake. And I know, its not that deep its just a goofy kids movie, but even then I don't think the movie works by that metric either because the jokes aren't funny. Almost every joke in the movie is a non sequitur and several of the jokes are strangely sexual for a kids movie. And not in a double entendre sneak this in for the parents kind of way Jack Black literally tells Jason Mamoa to let his hips guide him in a scene.
Everything about this movie feels like a cynical cash grab to me and I wouldn't recommend seeing it. Even if you are just looking for a dumb movie to entertain your kids there are movies that actually try to be entertaining and fun. Seriously check out "The Day the Earth Blew Up" its a loony tunes movie that came out in 2024 and it was still really funny.
